BOOK REVIEW | In Time by Alexandra Bracken

In Time (The Darkest Minds, #1.5)

Title: In Time
Author: Alexandra Bracken
Series: The Darkest Minds (#1.5)
Genre: dystopian, novella
Published by: Disney Publishing Worldwide in July 2013 (ebook)

Gabe’s life has been devastated in the wake of the economic crash. The only option left for someone like him to escape his tragic past is to leave his small town behind and to attempt to become a skip tracer. This already almost impossible task is made all the more difficult by his first score, a young girl who won’t speak, but who changes his life in ways he could never imagine.

Reading this book, it quickly became obvious to me that the author changed her writing style a little to match with the character she was writing about. The protagonist of this novella is Gabe, a 25 year old who’s trying to become a skip tracer. Naturally, a 25 year old guy who’s been hanging out with a few dodgy people (I didn’t like Hutch for a minute) and who has been through a lot of misery himself, doesn’t speak or think the same way a 17 year old does.

In the 89 pages this book counts, we see a lot of changes going on in Gabe’s behavior and ways of thinking. First he’s determined to find a ‘freak’ and turn them in and become a skip tracer. Until he actually finds a ‘freak’ who’s none other than Zu and she pretty much changes his life.

I found this novella to be so sad but beautiful at the same time. Unlike other novellas that a lot of the times are just different POV’s of situations we’ve already read about, this one tells a whole different story. I feel like you’re required to read this before going into Never Fade because it actually adds to the story in general.
